Searching For The Real Vincent Van Gogh

In the history of art, several painters and artists have captured the imagination of many with unparalleled genius in their works. Names such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael and Diego Velazquez quickly come to mind. These are artists more celebrated and known for their works than personality and personal lives. In terms of genius, [...]

Frame Painting - Art Prints Framed

Purchasing a framed painting (a large one anyway) may seem daunting to the first timer and may affect the decision they make in purchasing the painting itself. What I do is look at the painting and frame in isolation and then together as one piece.  If the choice is available, I usually like buying [...]

Van Gogh?s The Night Cafe Is Irresistible

It’s widely recognized that Vincent Van Gogh was one of the most insightful and talented painters of his time, but sadly he was also one of the most tortured, and he died at age 37 after only painting for ten years. Contemporary Mixed Media Abstract Painting with Epoxy Resin Glaze ~ Antique Roses" by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

 "Antique Roses" 11057
8x8x1.5" Mixed Media Abstract Painting with Epoxy Resin Glaze
The epoxy resin glaze gives a clear glass-like finish with lots of depth and it enhances all the colors. These pieces are more beautiful in p erson than what a photograph could ever present. There are several steps that need to be followed in sequence and the resin cures in 8 hours, hardens to full strength in 72 hours. The piece has prepared Tyvek, embellished foils, acrylic paint, Yupo collage and sand/gravel painted gold.

A side view of the cradle I made after 3 trips to Home Depot trying to find the correct wood, finding the right cutting tool, and lots of emails to the artist who introduced me to this mixed media way of work ing, Carol Nelson. I'm returning one tool and ended up cutting with a jigsaw that required a lot of patching with modeling paste!! I think in terms of time I would be better off buying ready made Ampersand gesso panels. It was a big learning curve. Now do I really need to buy a table saw? That would require me cleaning out the garage to find a place to put it and with it 103 in Texas I'll probably keep using the jigsaw for awhile. I used an extension cord and set up shop out in the back yard and I made cradles all day long yesterday.

Why drives you to purchase art? If you had a choice between a lovely car, house, piece of jewelry or art which would you choose and why? There could be no contest; art wins hands down.  While there is “art” in countless things, when I use the term, I refer to paintings and sculpture.  I [...]

"Stoney, Music and Motorcycles" 11042 ~ Torn Paper Portrait Collage Painting by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Stoney, Music and Motorcycles"
24x330x1.5 torn paper collage on canvas
NFS
This torn paper portrait collage painting is of one of my sons, Eric and his dog, Stoney. I gave a 2 day collage class to several of the Canvas by Ca nvas collaborative group and this was my demo piece. It will be varnished and delivered sometime this week.
I chose text and magazine images that describes some of Eric's interests and some of my feelings for him. That's some of the fun of doing a personal portrait of someone you know and searching for just the right text. Some of the text in this collage, "Don't go changin", No Fear, music notes near his mouth as he plays the harmonica in a band, "Boss" was my dad's name, "77" no meaning, just a nice graphic element, a cross, "The new rock star" is for Roxy, Stoney's friend who was left out, "S" for Stoney, "Boozefighters Motorcycle Club, National Chapter 69, and then my interpretation by finding "Where the wild things are".

I had to put a wh eel in his bandanna because his love affair with wheels go way back. In the 60's there was a big plastic tricycle that sat close to the ground. He wore out two and learned if he put one wheel on the curb, pedal fast to gain speed, he could blast off the curb into the driveway opening into the street on two wheels..sorta a sideways wheelie. Guess the boy grew up as a "street biker". His father's name was Dan and I found a large Dance and wrapped the text around and he loved Italian bikes, Moto Guzzi, soI had to put Italy in the mix (and I've been to Italy.) Eric was born in California, lived in Virginia, and so "Hey, its OK.he's in Texas now, and wrapped on the side is "to make something happen, tell a Texan it can't be done.". I couldn't resist a little sweet, syrupy saying about Mom, I hid on the side "Mom...a son's first love, a daughter's best friend."...awwww..

If you try a collage, remember it will wrinkle. That's OK and you'll think you have the canvas covered but will keep finding blank spots for days and it can be very tiring because you are processing so many design element decisions at once. The hardest thing on this one I think was the beard and how to make a black boxer vary in color.

In a later post, I will show you the work done by the CBC members. In the fall, I may do a collage workshop in Granbury and one in Graham and there is a possibility of one in Arlington. If you are interested, send me your name. It would be a 2 day portrait collage. Well, I say portrait one person in the class did a chicken so we just called it a chicken portrait.

Empty Easel has some more of my paintings on line HERE in the Featured Artist section.

I joined Daily Paintworks in June and have been posting one painting a day. If you're on Facebook please LIKE our page HERE.We'd love to get one thousand likes. David Marine developed the site and will advertise this next Monday on  Design Sponge, a very popul ar design blog by Grace Bonney.

Thanks for visiting my blog and try collaging a family member or your pet or yourself (someone who won't fuss if you don't get it exactly right. It's great fun.) Just be aware of those stray pieces of red paper in the tub or the bed that have stuck to sticky hands. You are not hemorrhaging.

Rogier Van Der Weyden ? A Portrait of a Lady

Roger Van der Weyden (1399 – 1464) an early Flemish artist was  highly successful in his lifetime. You probably know his religious triptychs the best, for example one of van Der Weyden’s greatest works, Descent from the Cross can be seen in the Prado museum in Madrid. A lot of his work, unfortunately has been lost and since he didn’t sign his paintings, art historians are still tyring to definitively find out which works are his. What we do know about Van der Weyden Rogier van Der Weyden worked for Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy as well as for other foreign princes such as the Medici’s in Florence. His early career is unknown but we do know that when he was 27 Van der Weyden worked at the workshop of Robert Campin, the dean of the Painters guild in Tournai. In 1435  he established himself as City Painter of Brussels, a good place to work in as it was fast developing into a regional centre. Fabulous Masterpieces’ Art Reproduction of Van der Wey
den’s A Portrait of a Lady Above is our fine art reproduction of Rogier Van der Weyden’s A Portrait of a Lady that we hand-painted for a customer. All of our reproduction oil paintings are hand-painted using Winsor & Newton oils onto a high grade duck cotton canvas. The time frame, depending on the complexity of the painting is usually between 4 -6 weeks from commissioning the painting to you receiving it. Van der Weyden’s original Portrait of a Lady, was painted c.1460 on panel and is currently situated in The National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. Van der Weyden was preoccupied with portraiture towards the end of his life and like Van Eyck used dark backgrounds to focus the attention on the sitter.  Van der Weyden reduces the viewer’s focus to four basic features: the woman’s headdress, dress, face and hands, her high headdress and severe hairline accentuate her elongated face, giving it a sculpted appearance. Are you fan of Rogier Van der Weyden? If you too, would like to commission a fine art reproduct
