On the easel -Varenna (Lake Como) W.I.P

Just a quick post to share what’s been on my easel of late. It’s been so blazing hot this week that I have not found an opportunity to get back outside and have pretty much retreated to the studio to work. I’m still keeping things relatively small for the time being, though 20×24″ isn’t, for me, exactly tiny:

Lake Como, Italy landscape painting by Jennifer Young

Yet again I thought I’d experiment with another limited palette, using the “big three” primaries of red, yellow blue. In this case the red is Cadmium red medium, the yellow, cad. yellow pale, and my ol’ friend ultramarine. The main difference for me is using cad. red medium. I almost never use this red but found some in my bins and thought, why not? At first I felt like I was shooting myself in the foot with this palette on this subject, as it is a bit more muted than when I use my usual gem-like transparent red of alizarin crimson. But having gotten used to it, I am quite liking it. I think I should be finished with this piece in another session or two, which will hopefully be this week, providing I have the studio time.

How to choose the perfect photo for your oil portrait

4 Quick Tips on How to Choose the Perfect Photo to Base Your Oil Painting on.      1. Are your photos high res? I’ve found that the best oil portraits come from high-resolution photographs. Anything over 1 MB is excellent. It just means that when your artist studies your photograph, he’ll be able to see all the small details that he needs in order to paint you an exquisite oil portrait. Lesser quality photos are still ok to work from, we’ve hand-painted oil paintings based on photos taken from mobile phones but the higher quality and clearer the image the better. 2. How sharp is your photo? Your artist can only paint what he sees. Therefore your photo needs to clearly show the artist the colours and details you want to have painted into your portrait. The more in focus your photo is, (as opposed to a blurry photo) the better your oil portrait will be.  Sharpness of photo is actually a key factor in what differentiates a good oil portrait from a great oil por
trait. 3. Lighting Try and avoid photos that show your subjects in strong sunlight or dark shadows as it doesn’t come across well in an oil painting.  Having subjects squint if they are looking directly in the sun or are covered by shadows so you can barely see their faces is again not ideal. 4. Background The great news is, your artist can change and alter the background of your portrait to however you want it. However, if you want the artist to copy the background as seen in your photo, it helps if your ideal background shows slight variations in colour and tones as this will give your oil portrait greater colour weight. Remember though, if the background in your photograph is very colourful and busy it will probably detract from the main subjects. Let us know when placing an order if you have any concerns about the background of your photo or if you would like any advice or alterations to be made. Have a question? We?d love to hear from you! "Bittersweet" ~ Metals and Mixed Media ~ Carol Nelson workshop ~ Texas Contemporary Artist Nancy Standlee

"Bittersweet"
Metals and Mixed Media, acrylic, 12 x 12 on MDF board, epoxy glaze

Nancy and Carol

Carol - Day One - Introducing us to the Texture Sampler

Carol Nelson flew in from Colorado with suitcases stuffed with various shapes and sizes of bags of metals and mixed media for her 4 day Granbury workshop. That creative lady even brought along a homemade anvil for the wire pounding (which we broke), a mini ironing board, a butane torch (oh, what fun), hammers, nails, an electric drill and numerous jars of mysterious substances. I wonder if she is on the TSA's watch list? More than once I heard one student say to another "Can you please pound your nails in the other room?"
Carol is a very organized instructor with handouts and a plan. Day one we did a texture sampler under closest surveillance by the teacher. This gave us a good foundation and reference points for our first painting. She wisely had us reined in somewhat on the first project by having a grab bag of choices, such as compositi on, color scheme, and materials used. This was finely orchestrated bu t some students declared the Picasso quote of "I begin with an idea and then it becomes something else." My favorite Carol Nelson quote is "If its brown, put gesso on it."

This was my 2nd Carol Nelson workshop. See my blog post HERE and a few posts following about the first one when I traveled to Colorado to attend a two day workshop. After checking these older posts I see I did finish a small study there "Butterfly Dreams" that finally saw some epoxy in the Granbury workshop because after the resin is poured the piece can't be moved for several days and must remain level. You can see the tubs on a cart that Carol hauled in for the CO. class and I was amazed how much she brought to Texas in her luggage.
Many times I'm asked "Why do you repeat so many of the workshops?" I just don't get it all the first time. The instructors develop new methods and jettison some old ones, they find new materials to share and new resources. Would I take a 3rd Nelson workshop? Yes and before this class was over there were cries for her to return to Granbury. Diana Littlejohn handles the workshop details for LGAA and click HERE for her contact information if you'd like to be placed on a workshop list.

My painting above, "Bittersweet" was a result of my grab bag draw painting plus and little Standlee bling of gold leaf. My choices were the Burridge color whe el with split complements, cruciform composition, using flattened wir e, painted foil, and a silicone resist. I chose a red dominant color scheme. This piece has a beautiful depth of color after the resin pour and I don't have the photography skills to do it justice. Carol suggested I mount it on a piece of matte black wood support with a weighted bottom. We'll see. It's been a year and I still haven't made cradles for the first CO. workshop pieces. I bought a small jig saw and it's still in the box but now I think I'm ready to try my hand at making some cradles.
I have a few other pieces finished while in this great workshop that I will post soon so check back. Carol, as you travel home to Colorado today just know that you have inspired a lot of Texas ladies and one gent in this activity packed workshop. Godspeed.

Contemporary Acrylic Abstract Painting ~ Cheryl McClure Workshop ~ Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Road Work Ahead"
(a contemporary abstract painting)
24"x 24"x1.5" acrylic on canvas (texture, charcoal, pencil)

A contemporary abstract workshop painting with friends is a good summer start and it will be one of the highlights of 2011. About 20 of us gathered at the Artists' Showplace for Cheryl McClure's workshop: Abstract: the Process, June 21-24 from 9:30-4:00 (or until someone said "We're locking the doors--goodnight!"

I didn't bring a canvas as large as Cheryl's 30 x 40 on the supply list but large for me was the above 24"x24" and even some smaller ones lurking under my table, plus a few turkeys to rework. It doesn't matter the workshop but by the time I get it all gathered up in the living room to be loaded in the car, the travel, unloading and setup I always question myself about why am I doing this and never again do I want to go to this trouble and expense. After I return from the workshop, I'm always glad I made the effort and have some new techniques to add to my arsenal, some new friends made, old ones visited and more good memories.
In this workshop we added lots of texture and then toned the canvas before making our charcoal and paint marks prior to painting in our color choice. One way to make those marks was with an Egb ert (not a nerd which came to mind) brush to make long flowing brush marks. Yes, I've already ordered a few Egberts.

The title:
It's always a little more difficult for me to title an abstract; however, while driving home in heavy Dallas traffic on Friday afternoon I saw "road work ahead" and thought I'm giving some of my pieces from this workshop some "road sign" titles. I can't tell you if this one is finished or not. It has not been varnished and I see an area I'd like to add a little gold leaf but then I tend to want a little bling on most of my work.

Cheryl's Palette.. Ok..she uses more than one a nd this is how she sets up one of them before the painting process begins. Her neutrals are in the center.

The Great Wave by Hokusai

Fabulous Masterpieces was asked to paint a fine art reproduction oil painting of The Great Wave by Hokusai for customers in Australia. We’ve just been sent an insitu photograph of the finished fine art replica and I thought I?d show you what it looks like. The Great Wave by Japanese artist, Hokusai was originally a wood block print. The Great Wave was actually the first in a series of 36 views of Mount Fiji and is not only Hokusai?s most famous work but arguably one of the most recognized works of Japanese art in the world. The original wood cut of Hokusai’s The Great Wave is actually quite small, it only measures 25.4 cm x 37.1 cm and can be found at the Hakone Museum in Japan.  Fabulous Masterpieces‘ art reproduction of The Great Wave, which you can see in the photo, was made-to-measure to fit the client’s wall space and measured 220 cm x 151 cm. Hokusai (1760 – 1849) loved to depict water in motion and in this seascape, even though it’s stormy, the sun is shining. It is a lovely painting! Would you like to know about The Great Wave by Hokusai? Contemporary Mixed Media Abstract ~ "Be Yourself" by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Be Yourself"
8x8 on mdf board

Mixed media abstract, prepared Tyvek, foil, textured papers, oriental papers, cut up paintings, found papers, coated with epoxy resin, blue color painting (click on the image to enlarge)

I am surprised at this painting when I see that it's blue as this is not a color I usually work in but the epoxy resin coating gives it a lot of dimension and depth. This is one of the mixed media paintings I worked on in the Carol Nelson Granbury workshop. See my blog post HERE. I have plans to make a cradle for it later with a new saw but the learning, frustration curve may be too much!

See other paintings in my gallery at Daily Paintworks.
I've given my blog a new face lift. Several had mentioned the black background was hard to read so I decided to go a little lighter.

The 10 Most Expensive Pieces of Art sold at Auction

Ever wondered what the top 10 most expensive paintings ever sold at auction were? Have you ever wondered how much some paintings actually get sold for at auction?  Million and millions of pounds are spent year on year by the wealthy looking for a sought out piece of artwork. So what is the most expensive piece of art?   1. Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I by Gustav Klimt $135,000,000 Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I by Gustav Klimt (1907) This painting was sold to Ronald Lauder for his Neue Galere in New York City for $135 million in June 2006 at Christie’s, New York. The portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, the wife of a Jewish sugar industrialist is considered one of the artist’s masterpieces.  Did you know that Adele Bloch-Bauer became the only model who was painted twice by Klimt  see the other at the Klimt online gallery. 2. Garçon à la Pipe by Pablo Picasso ($104,100,000) Garçon à la Pipe (Boy with a Pipe) is a painting by Pablo Picasso, painted in 1905 during Picasso’s famous Rose Period, a period in which Picasso preferred cheerful orange and pink colours.  On May 5, 2004 it sold for $104.1 million at Sotheby’s auction house in New York, after having been given a pre-sale estimate of $70 million by the auction house. The record price was a bit of a surprise since the painting is not made in the Cubist style that Picasso is so renowned for. Many art critics have stated that the painting’s high sale price has much more to do with the artist’s name than with the merit or historical importance of the painting.   3.Dora Maar au Chat by Pablo Picasso ($95,200,000) Dora Maar au Chat (Dora Maar with Cat) is a 1941 painting by Pablo Picasso. It depicts Dora Maar, the painter’s mistress, seated on a chair with a small cat perched on her shoulders. The work is painted in Picasso’s well-known cubist style. It was sold in an auction of impressionist works held at Sotheby’s on May 3, 2006 in New York to an anonymous bidder, whose final bid was $95.2 million, well exceeding the pre-auction $50 million estimates.   4. Portrait of Dr. Gachet by Vincent van Gogh ($82,500,000) This painting was sold to Japanese businessman Ryoei Sai for $82.5 million on May 15, 1990 at Christie’s, New York.  Ryoei Saito shocked the world when he announced that he wanted the van Gogh painting to be cremated with him at his death. Later he explained he was using a figure of speech: threatening to torch the oils was just an expression of intense affection for the masterpiece.  Vincent van Gogh actually painted two versions of Dr Gachet’s portrait with a slightly different color scheme. The other version is located at the Musée d’ Orsay in Paris.   5. Bal Au Moulin de la Galette by Pierre-Auguste Renoir ($78,000,000) Bal au Moulin de la Galette, Montmartre is an 1876 painting by French artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir. There are two versions of this...

"Granbury Mixed Floral" by Texas Contemporary Painter Nancy Standlee

"Mixed Floral - Granbury"Link10" sq. Acrylic on Gessoed watercolor paper

This has been difficult to photograph because I added gold paint in the vase - love that bling. This was another floral (see post HERE) that I painted during the Robert Burridge workshop in Granbury recently.

My friend Carol Nelson will be conducting a 4 day workshop in Granbury May 23-26, 2011. It is full. I f lew to Denver to study with Carol in March 2010. One of the pieces th at was inspired from that workshop won an honorable mention. Carol describes her workshop like this:

In this workshop, we will explore creating abstract compositions on a variety of supports using numerous acrylic mediums, metals, and collage materials. Participants will make texture samplers, learn about the fundamentals of abstract composition, types of supports, methods of attachment, tyvek preparation, epoxy resin application, and presentation options for a finished piece.

I've signed up for a Sante Fe Workshop with Niki Gulley in August and I hav e been thinking about water-soluble oils and have been reading about them - again. The workshop will be a painting and photography class with landscape plein air painting from different picturesque settings daily with demos and critiques (a little time for sightseeing and shopping.) Niki is from Dallas and has 20 years painting experience and 10 years teaching. Her husband is the photographer for the other choice in the workshop. I'm a studio painter but I thought I "might" try some plein air this summer and is there a more interesting site than Santa Fe? I will probably paint with my acrylics but have been reading about water soluble oils but I've never painted with oils - water soluble or not. I have two excellent books on the subject, "Water-soluble Oils" by Sean Dye and "No Experience Required: Water Soluble Oils" by Mary Deutschman. I somehow lost my Dye one and have spent many frantic hours looking for it and finally found it in a too ridiculous place and I won't even say where.
This has caused me to think about the need for a sign aling device to be implanted in all things we purchase from iPhones, socks, books, DVD's for those of us who are organizationally challenged. When an item is lost, you call this central number and enter a description of the item, the phone will emit a tracer signal that causes the lost item to emit a piercing alarm or a gentle voice with maybe "Please come find me. I'm in your top dresser drawer hiding under the white sock". (In my case, it would have said..hey, you dummy, look on your bed at that stack of books you're reading.) Fortunately, I won't have to make that decision (oil or acrylic) today. Like Scarlet I'll think about it tomorrow. Today I need to start "searching" for all things to use in the Carol Nelson workshop. I do hope I find them or I may be the one emitting a piercing scream.
